HVOF ID Coating Thermal Spray Gun For Wear Protection Of Internal Pipe Surfaces

Our Convertible HVAF and HVOF ID gun is advanced equipment for the deposition of wear resistant tungsten carbide and Hastelloy-type coatings onto internal surfaces of pipes, bends and bores. It is not an extension – it is a high velocity combustion gun with axial powder feed.

The Kermetico Convertible ID HVAF + HVOF Gun For Coating Pipe Diameters As Small As 80 mm (3.15”)

We created our Convertible ID lance in 2017 to spray coatings onto internal diameters as small as 3.15 inches (80mm) to a depth of up to 5 feet (1,500 mm). Low power (just 30-40 kW) prevents the ID gun and the workpiece from overheating, and the efficient design of the gun results in the effective spraying of alloyed and tungsten carbide coatings onto internal diameters.

Inner surfaces of pipes and bores frequently need corrosion and wear resistant coatings to prevent damage from aggressive media.

We have designed our Convertible HVAF and HVOF gun on the basis of our successful HVAF AK-ID gun. It features the same axial powder supply and spray angle, that makes it extremely efficient in depositing wear and corrosion resistant coatings onto internal surfaces. It works both in HVAF mode (cooler combustion) and HVOF (higher combustion temperature).

HVOF ID Coating Applications

The Convertible HVAF + HVOF ID thermal spray system is ideal for hardfacing internal diameters of pipes, tubes, barrels, and cylinder bores that can be effectively rotated.

The ID gun provides uniform non-permeable wear and corrosion resistant cermet coatings with a spray rate up to 5 kg or 11 lbs. per hour, achieving a tungsten carbide coating hardness of 950 HV300 in internal diameters less than 4” and over 1,100 HV300 hardness in 4.0” (102 mm) and larger internal diameters.

ID Coating Quality

Air and oxygen combustion allows us to manage the combustion temperature, optimizing it for the best quality and deposition efficiency for a given powder.

The heating of the feedstock particles in the combustion chamber occurs at high pressure, where heat transfer is the most efficient. The size of the chamber provides a long residence time for the material to heat. Thus, the energy transfer efficiency is increased noticeably compared to other high-velocity spraying methods. This results in much higher spray rates for our Convertible high velocity combustion guns in general.

The Application Of Wear And Corrosion Resistant Cermet Coatings Onto Internal Diameters with Our HVAF & HVOF ID Guns

We recommend using our equipment for thermal spray coating of:

  • pipes and fittings
  • bends and elbows
  • pump housings and sleeves
  • cylinder bores
  • complex parts, like hydro turbine Francis runners
Spraying Complex Parts

In some cases, such as pumps or Francis runners, it is not enough to deposit a coating onto internal surfaces. We need to protect both internal and external surfaces. While many shops have just one model of a given technology in-house, we make equipment to address both of these requirements. Our Convertible family complements our ID’s capabilities with two outer diameter guns and one Internal Diameter Rotating gun (IDR):

  • C7 – an HVAF/HVOF gun for large parts
  • C6 – a general purpose HVAF-HVOF gun
